These are often the first words generated by a computer programmer using a language for the first time. These are my first published words on Substack.
This newsletter and related content will revolve around my disease and disabilities like it. Scientific and medical progress in understanding, treating, and preventing them. Technological, financial, and social solutions to at least surviving and ideally thriving. Sometimes it will be about patients. Sometimes it may be about their caregivers or loved ones. Sometimes it will be about or even written for medical professionals and doctors —please be patient if it gets technical. Sometimes it will be about me, Raymond Walter, PhD. Sometimes it will be about some financial geekery that has caught my interest but has nothing to do with disability.
I learned about Substack, of all places, from Tucker Carlson, who enthusiastically endorsed the platform every time he hosted the accomplished journalist Glenn Greenwald. It caught my attention when the economist Bryan Caplan adopted the platform rather than WordPress, as I had alternately procrastinated and struggled to satisfactorily format a blog and personal website using WordPress. I crossed the threshold after learning scholars Glenn Loury and John McWhorter adopted the platform. These scholars, journalists, and pundits found their voices long before using this platform. I have yet to find my own, so please bear with me as I find mine. Shout if you hear me!
I have diverse interests. I struggle every day with an all-encompassing disease. I have a time-consuming, intellectually demanding job. I have a busy life, as we all seem to have in adulthood. I hope to consistently deliver thought-provoking content that is valuable to an audience, an audience that I hope to call my own.
